A Different Kind of Shopping

We officially began preparing for the Martin's Cove Youth Trek by shopping at Sportmen's Warehouse. I can't say that I've been there before because I'm not usually shopping for hunting equipment, but they seem to have all the supplies that we have been warned that we will need. Partial checklist below:

1. Insect Repellent with at least 40% deet (What is this anyway?)
2. Spray for ticks
3. Camping mirror (Okay, not on the list but what I deem as essential)
4. Wool socks with dry-wick liners (Bought a total of 10 pairs for the 5 of us going in the family)
5. 5 pairs of durable gloves (For pushing and pulling handcarts of course)
6. Rain ponchos
7. Lip balm and sunscreen
8. 5 gallon buckets (Bought 30 for all the youth and leaders from our ward attending)
9. Shin compression brace for me (Hoping it will free me from the shin splints I seem to be plagued with lately--I don't want to be in pain walking the 25 miles in 3 days that we will cover along the trail).
10. 4 Pioneer skirts and bonnets (Ordered online from tiny pictures of fabric swatches. We have yet to see the finished products--we hope they all fit right because they're custom made).

Dan and I definitely made a dent in the "to do" list to get us all ready. The mental preparations began several weeks ago for me, which include visualizing no flushing toilets, no showers, wearing pioneer attire, rattlesnakes, relentless wind, possibly hail, snow, rain, scorching heat or all of the above and sadly no Diet Coke (We are only allowed 17 lbs--leaders included).

On the other hand, I've read a half dozen books about the Willie and Martin Handcart Companies and I am humbled by their sacrifices and faith. I really can't wait to share what I know will be a life changing experience with the youth of our stake!

You are soooo good to go on a trek. I sadly do not have the fortitude, faith or ability to give up modern convienances for any length of time. I hope you have a great time. We will be excited to hear of all your experiences!

We were able to go on the Martin's Cove Trek 3 years ago with our stake's entire YM/YW as a Ma and PA and let me tell you....it changed our lives forever! The spirit still remains the same there...very humbling. Loved it! Hope you have an enjoyable experience.
