Twin Talk

When these two started talking no one could understand them.
However, they could understand each other perfectly and that suited them just fine.
By the time preschool rolled around,
we decided that a little speech therapy would help them communicate better with the real world.
(The pictures emphasize their displeasure of it)
By the time they hit kindergarten, they had decided they didn't need speech anymore.
I would have probably agreed with them, but I knew it wouldn't hurt either.
Then came the old adage that "two heads are better than one."
They decided to start ditching speech...going to the bathroom, sitting outside the school, etc.
I guess their school teacher assumed they were going where they were supposed to go
and at the other end, the speech teacher figured they were sick that day.
They eventually got caught.
They communicate perfectly and beautifully today, and have so for a long time.
Then came high school and their enrollment in ASL (American Sign Language).
They communicate silently and effortlessly with each other and the rest of the family sits perplexed and sometimes even annoyed. Yet, I'm also proud as punch that they've picked up on it so quickly and really like it.
I sometimes think it's payback for all those speech therapy lessons!
